Terms of Use

These terms govern your access to FactVote’s election research tools, public-record library, account features, ballot notes, and AI-assisted answers.

Effective and last updated: October 24, 2026

Important: FactVote is an independent research service. It is not a government website, election authority, campaign, political party, or official voting system.

Operator

FactVote is personally operated by Chris Sanders. It is an independent election research project, not an election office or an established nonprofit organization.

1. Agreement to these terms

By accessing or using FactVote (the “Service”), you agree to these Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service. If you use FactVote for an organization, you represent that you have authority to bind that organization.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. If you are under the age of legal majority where you live, you may use the Service only with permission from a parent or legal guardian. The Service is offered for general audiences and is not directed to children under 13.

3. What FactVote provides

FactVote organizes election information, candidate statements, public records, source links, issue research, personal preferences, ballot notes, and AI-assisted explanations. Coverage varies by place, office, election, candidate, and source availability. Features may be added, changed, suspended, or removed as the Service develops.

FactVote does not register voters, determine voter eligibility, issue or accept ballots, count votes, provide official election instructions, or guarantee that any displayed contest appears on your exact ballot.

4. Accounts and security

You are responsible for providing accurate account information, protecting your password and access credentials, and promptly notifying FactVote if you suspect unauthorized access. You may not impersonate another person, create an account through deception, or use another person’s account without permission.

5. Acceptable use

You may use FactVote for lawful personal, educational, journalistic, civic, and research purposes. You may not:

  • break any law or violate another person’s rights;
  • interfere with the Service, bypass access or security controls, introduce malicious code, or probe for vulnerabilities without written authorization;
  • use automated requests at a volume that disrupts the Service or evades published technical limits;
  • misrepresent FactVote content as an official government record, official ballot, endorsement, or individualized professional advice;
  • use the Service or its output to deceive voters, suppress lawful voting, harass people, or facilitate fraud; or
  • copy or exploit protected elements of the Service in a way that violates intellectual-property law.

6. Questions, reports, and feedback

If you submit questions, error reports, feedback, or other material, you represent that you have the right to provide it. You give FactVote permission to use that material to operate, secure, evaluate, and improve the Service. Do not submit confidential information or personal information about another person unless you are authorized to do so.

7. Election information and AI output

Election information can change quickly. Candidate qualification, contest eligibility, deadlines, polling information, district assignments, ballot order, and ballot measures must be confirmed with the appropriate state or local election authority. Personal ballot selections saved in FactVote are research notes, not votes and not an official ballot.

AI-assisted answers and summaries can be incomplete or wrong even when sources are linked. You are responsible for reviewing the cited records and reaching your own conclusions. The Election & AI Disclaimer is incorporated into these Terms.

8. Third-party sources and services

FactVote links to and may display material from government agencies, candidates, campaigns, legislative bodies, courts, news archives, and other third parties. Those parties control their own content and services. A link or citation does not imply affiliation, sponsorship, approval, or endorsement by FactVote.

9. Ownership

FactVote and its licensors own the Service’s software, design, branding, original writing, and original organization of content. Government records, candidate materials, quotations, linked pages, and other third-party materials remain subject to the rights and legal status that apply to them. Nothing in these Terms transfers ownership of third-party content to FactVote or to you.

10. Suspension and termination

You may stop using FactVote at any time. FactVote may limit, suspend, or terminate access when reasonably necessary to protect users, comply with law, investigate misuse, maintain security, or enforce these Terms. Where practical, FactVote will try to provide notice before terminating an account.

11. Warranty disclaimer

To the fullest extent allowed by law, the Service is provided “as is” and “as available.” FactVote disclaims implied warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and non-infringement. FactVote does not warrant that the Service will always be available, secure, complete, current, or error-free.

12. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent allowed by law, FactVote and its officers, employees, contractors, and service providers will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for loss of data, opportunity, goodwill, or profits arising from the Service. FactVote’s total liability for any claim relating to the Service will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid FactVote for the Service during the 12 months before the claim or 100 U.S. dollars. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

13. Indemnification

To the extent allowed by law, you agree to defend and indemnify FactVote from third-party claims, damages, and reasonable costs arising from your unlawful use of the Service, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of another person’s rights.

14. Changes to these terms

FactVote may update these Terms as the Service or applicable requirements change. The effective date above identifies the current version. Material changes will be presented through a reasonable notice on the Service. Continued use after updated Terms take effect means you accept the revised Terms.

15. General terms

Applicable law governs these Terms without regard to conflict-of-law rules. If any provision is unenforceable, it will be limited to the minimum extent necessary and the remaining provisions will stay in effect. Failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not transfer these Terms without FactVote’s consent; FactVote may transfer them as part of a reorganization, financing, merger, sale, or similar transaction.

16. Contact

Questions about these Terms may be sent to [email protected].

Research transparency and content use

See Methodology & Corrections for the distinction between source evidence and FactVote assessments, and Copyright & Content Use for attribution and source-material rights. A source link, match, or ranking is not a candidate endorsement. Public debate posts can be read by others; avoid including information you want to keep private.

For reporting controls and privacy, accessibility, or rights concerns, use Contact / Report an Error.

Voluntary support

FactVote support is voluntary support for a personally operated project, not a tax-deductible charitable donation. Donations are not available during the public beta.
