Beyond her private sector experience, public service and helping others has always been central to Suzan’s story. It is a key reason she decided to seek public office. Economic Security and Rising Costs for Families

Candidate position

While our economy grew because of Democrats’ economic policies, including the expansion of the Child Tax Credit, under the Trump administration many families are struggling with rising costs including the price of gas, housing, and child care. I’m committed to creating an economy that works for everyone by helping our small businesses and local industries rebuild so they can support good-paying jobs for years to come, including in the aerospace, manufacturing, high-tech, sustainable agriculture, clean energy, and health care industries. We must support businesses that are creating jobs and invest in the training, education, and skills of our workers to ensure they are prepared for success. This has been a long-term commitment of mine since I secured $200 million to expand job training opportunities during my first term in Congress.

Health care

Candidate position

We cannot go back to the days when someone could be denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition or when you could be charged more for coverage for simply being a woman. That’s why I have consistently voted to protect the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and build on it. I championed the passage of the American Rescue Plan in 2021, which included the first major expansion of the advanced premium tax credits since the ACA’s initial passage, which helped nearly 22 million people across the country enroll in affordable, quality health care. However, Congressional Republicans let these tax credits expire at the end of 2025. Because Congress failed to extend them, Washingtonians enrolled in health plans through WA Healthplanfinder are seeing their premiums increase by an average of 65 percent. This will cause tens of thousands of Washingtonians to lose their health care coverage.

Securing Reproductive Rights

Candidate position

An extreme Republican supermajority on the Supreme Court has now stripped women of their constitutional right to an abortion. This is the culmination of 50 years of Republicans’ assault on women and now millions of women have lost the ability to make their own health care decisions. While Washington protects abortion access in law, Republicans have been clear they want to pass a nationwide abortion ban. We cannot let this happen. We cannot let our daughters have less freedom than we have enjoyed for nearly a half-century. Moreover, our clinics have experienced an unprecedented influx of out-of-state patients seeking life-saving medical care.

Housing and Homelessness

Candidate position

Hundreds of thousands of Americans across the country lack access to safe, affordable housing. More than 12 million households in America pay more than half of their income in rent, while many others find housing completely out of reach—leaving them without a stable roof over their head, and often forcing them to sleep on the streets. This is unacceptable. To help lift families out of poverty and expand access to opportunity for all, we must take immediate action to address housing instability.

I am working to ensure the ACA tax credits are permanent. In January 2026, House Democrats fought for legislation to extend them for three years. While this effort passed the House of Representatives, Republicans in the Senate stalled this effort, leaving many Americans with rising health care costs. The fight isn’t over, and I’m still working everyday to restore this critical program.

Candidate position

Washington is a leader in the emerging green economy. Our innovative industries and talented workforce lead the nation in developing the next generation of clean energy technologies. Energy policy is deeply tied to addressing climate change. To make America a sustainable, energy-independent global leader, we must reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and foreign oil. It’s urgent that we transform our economy into one based on clean and renewable energy sources, and I will continue to fight back against any efforts by the Trump administration to undo our progress toward a cleaner, healthier future.

We must also address the endemic gun violence in America so our families and communities are safe. As a mother and grandmother, I am sickened and outraged by the seemingly never-ending incidents of gun violence. While there is no one law or set of laws that will prevent every senseless shooting, we must do more to address this tragic cycle of gun violence. I serve on the Congressional Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and remain committed to finding sensible solutions to this problem. I support expanding background checks, banning the sale of semiautomatic assault weapons, and implementing extreme risk protection orders, also known as red flag laws, as the foundation of commonsense gun reforms. I support the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act which will help protect our children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence across our country. I am a cosponsor of the Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act, which would allow victims of gun violence to sue gun manufacturers, dealers, and sellers for negligence, unlawful marketing, and trafficking, removing the industry’s special legal immunity. I support the Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act, legislation that would place limits and safeguards on the online market for ammunition to stop dangerous individuals from easily obtaining ammunition over the internet.

Medicaid, called Apple Health in Washington, along with the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) provide coverage to nearly 80 million people nationwide, including more than 1.8 million Washingtonians. These programs play a crucial role in providing families access to health care. However, the Republican’s Big, Ugly Bill, gave substantial tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans and paid for them by slashing Medicaid funding by $1 trillion. These cuts include at least $3 billion from Apple Health each year. We must reverse these cruel, Republican cuts to Medicaid when Democrats take back the House Majority.

Medicare is a cornerstone of our nation’s health care system. I am committed to protecting it and will fight against any efforts to privatize or dismantle Medicare. The focus instead should be on controlling the rising costs of care and improving the quality of care our seniors receive. That’s why I championed policies that now allow the government to negotiate lower prescription drug prices in Medicare, cap insulin prices at $35 per month, and cap out-of-pocket drug costs for seniors at $2,000 annually. These commonsense reforms are costs for seniors and improve access to care. Moving forward, we must extend these hard-fought cost savings to all Americans, not just those with Medicare.

Candidate position

As a member of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, I am focused on modernizing the tax code and creating policies that are fair for all Americans and give businesses the ability to plan for the future. Tax policy should focus on growing the middle class and providing economic opportunity. Through a modernized tax code, we can also invest more in America, encouraging job creation and innovation. Congress should focus on simplifying our tax code by eliminating inefficient and unfair tax breaks and subsidies that no longer make sense in today’s global economy. Any time our federal government offers a tax break or subsidy, we should consider it as an investment and evaluate whether we are getting an adequate return. We must also stop governing retroactively and with short-term policies that Congress must extend each year. Families and businesses need predictability and stability.

The Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais is just the latest example of Trump and Republicans attempts to rig the midterms. The decision shows the need for national legislation to protect the rights of all voters, end these mid-decade gerrymanders, and the far-right’s assault on the Voting Rights Act. I am an original cosponsor and loud advocate for the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to do just that.

Health care

Candidate position

During my time in Congress, I have focused on making health care work better for patients and providers. That is why I introduced the Improving Seniors’ Timely Access to Care Act to streamline health insurance red tape to deliver quality care faster. Due to the overwhelming bipartisan support for my legislation, the federal government implemented many elements of the bill, and I am now focused on cementing that policy into law so that insurance plans will be held accountable for delaying or denying medically necessary care that seniors are entitled to.

Economic Security and Rising Costs for Families

Candidate position

We need a Congress that will focus on putting working families and broad economic growth first, and that’s what I’m fighting for every day. I continue to champion efforts that provide tax relief for the middle-class, including the enhanced Child Tax Credit and the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit. The enhanced Child Tax Credit was included in the American Rescue Plan and provided families with monthly checks for 6 months and lifted 3 million kids out of poverty. I am also the lead sponsor of legislation that would create or preserve more than 2 million affordable housing units nationwide in the next decade and address the growing housing crisis.

Immigration and border policy

Candidate position

To spur job growth and drive our economy forward, we must pass comprehensive immigration reform. I helped introduce legislation during my first term that would create an earned path to citizenship for those who are here, working, and with no criminal record. It would make our nation safer, while also eliminating backlogs, reuniting families, and would meet the demands of our nation’s economy today and into tomorrow. I will continue to keep fighting for comprehensive immigration reform.

Economic Security and Rising Costs for Families

Candidate position

The President has plunged us into a reckless war in Iran that has cost American lives, billions of dollars, and destabilized the Middle East and global markets. He’s done all of this without articulating a strategy with clear objectives and has not made the case to the American public for the justification for his war of choice. Congress has the sole authority to declare war. I have voted in favor of multiple War Powers Resolutions directing the removal of the U.S. Armed forces from hostilities within or against Venezuela and from hostilities with Iran. I continue to oppose rogue presidential military operations and will do everything possible to ensure that the American people are not drawn into forever wars.

Immigration and border policy

I’ve voted against hyperpartisan bills that write a blank check for ICE without meaningful reforms because the agency under Trump has stoked fear and escalated tensions in our communities. We need legal guardrails to prevent ICE from committing violence and terrorizing our communities.

Reproductive rights

Candidate position

To help working families, I’ve led on permanently expanding the Child Tax Credit, which would send monthly checks to families and cut child poverty in half. I’ve introduced bipartisan legislation to spur the creation of two million affordable homes. It’s past time to reform our immigration system and rein in out-of-control ICE agents who have spread fear and violence in our communities. Unlike MAGA Republicans, I’m committed to strengthening Social Security and Medicare. I strongly support reproductive rights and will do everything I can to fight back against Republican extremists’ attempts to pass a nationwide abortion ban.

Education

Candidate position

Trump has recklessly tried to shutter the Department of Education. I strongly oppose his illegal attempt to dismantle the department, which would slash federal funding for public schools nationwide, eliminate programs for children with disabilities, and cut programs that make attending college affordable. Let’s be clear, eliminating the Department of Education would require an act of Congress – and I will fight any effort to do so.

Every numbered U.S. House roll call published by the Clerk during the configured service window is reconciled through the member's exact Bioguide ID. Clerk XML through 2002 does not publish Bioguide IDs, so those rows require a candidate-specific official House identity and service bridge plus one unique exact published-name, party, and state tuple. A published roll without an identity-safe row is retained as an explicit source omission and is not labeled as a vote or absence. Voice votes and other actions without member-level roll calls are outside this archive.
