About this office
Understand the responsibilities, authority, and limits of the office in this contest.
What a Texas railroad commissioner does
The three-member Railroad Commission regulates major parts of Texas's oil and gas, pipeline, natural-gas utility, alternative-fuel, critical-infrastructure, and surface-mining industries; it no longer regulates railroads.
Shared authority: One commissioner does not control the commission or Texas energy policy alone. The other commissioners, Legislature, agencies, courts, federal regulators, local governments, and private operators have distinct roles.
How FactVote presents the public record: FactVote should distinguish an individual commissioner's recorded vote or direct statement from a collective commission or staff action and retain exact official evidence.
