Putting My Policy Experience to Work

Candidate-stated

When the pandemic hit, I left my research career to serve the public as a science and tech expert in our federal government. In the U.S. Senate, I fought corruption and helped write bipartisan laws that invest in safer communities, clean water, and good-paying union jobs. At the National Institutes of Health, I worked to expand access to health care. And at the U.S. Government Accountability Office, I helped Congress use facts to solve real-world problems, protected your hard-earned tax dollars from waste, and served as an elected union leader to stand up for hundreds of federal workers.

WHERE I COME FROM.

Candidate-stated

Growing up in a mixed family in South Texas, I have witnessed the disparities in opportunities given to Hispanic and White working class-families like my own. I watched my family work hard but still struggle living paycheck to paycheck. With the help of student loans, scholarships, and Pell grants, I earned two degrees from the University of Texas at Austin in 2007. While in college, I discovered my passion for biology – even though I had never known a scientist growing up. After graduating from college, I joined Teach For America to help address the educational inequities in our country that I personally experienced based on my zip code. I spent three years serving our country as a middle school science teacher in an underserved community in NYC before attending graduate school.
