PROTECTING PUBLIC LANDS

Source-published biography

New Mexico’s public lands are core to our identity. Whether you hike, bike, hunt, fish, camp, or simply enjoy our great outdoors, we must ensure that our children and their children are able to access New Mexico as we do today. This is why Gabe worked with Republicans to reduce wildfire risk, getting his bipartisan bill to fight New Mexico wildfires signed into law by President Trump. But when Trump tried to sell off New Mexico’s public lands, Vasquez led the successful bipartisan effort that stopped him. A lifelong hunter and angler, Vasquez founded the Bipartisan Public Lands Caucus to protect New Mexicans’ ability to hunt, fish, and hike on public lands.

PROTECTING REPRODUCTIVE HEALTHCARE

Source-published biography

Access to healthcare is a right and politicians in Congress and in state legislatures shouldn’t stand between women and their healthcare. Gabe has always and will always oppose any attempt by Republicans in Congress to ban access to abortion, birth control, or to prevent women from having the right to choose. It’s more important than ever that we defend this right in New Mexico.

He worked his way through college, helped build a local small business, and served on the Las Cruces City Council before being elected to Congress.

Source-published biography

For more than a decade, Gabe, an NMSU graduate, has dedicated himself to public service. In 2013, after helping build a Las Cruces small business, he joined Senator Heinrich’s staff and worked across southern New Mexico to solve problems for New Mexico businesses, communities, and families. He was also instrumental in the designation of the Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument, protecting it from harmful development and safeguarding it for future generations. In 2017, he was elected to the Las Cruces City Council with over 70 percent of the vote. In this role, Gabe was able to expand and improve park access, updated the district’s infrastructure, promoted policy that created thousands of jobs, and helped craft a comprehensive development plan that focused on lifting families out of poverty. In prior years, Gabe has served as the executive director of the Las Cruces Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, worked in public lands conservation, served on a border security taskforce, several community nonprofit boards, and as a policy advocate promoting child welfare and family wellbeing at the federal level.

Health care

Candidate position

New Mexico’s workers and small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and Gabe will always put them first. For too long the nation’s largest corporations haven’t paid their fair share, while CEOs and wealthy investors inflate their salaries and dividends. They do this while refusing to increase pay or benefits for workers. We can’t afford to allow this to continue. Gabe will work every day to help our workers and small businesses thrive and ensure that corporations are paying their fair share. This starts with raising wages, supporting workers’ right to organize and join a union, supporting the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, increasing support for our small businesses, and repealing the Trump tax cuts that paid for tax cuts for the rich by cutting health care and food assistance for working families. Gabe also understands that New Mexicans are struggling to pay their bills because of rising prices, and that’s why he’ll support policies that cut taxes on working families while lowering the cost of healthcare, childcare, and utilities.

Public safety and justice

Candidate position

Everyone deserves to feel safe in their communities, and far too many New Mexicans are being impacted by crime. Gabe worked with law enforcement on the Las Cruces City Council to increase their police budget by $3.8 million. In Congress, he’s worked with Republicans, introducing bipartisan bills to crack down on cartels and impose harsher penalties on violent criminals like human smugglers and fentanyl traffickers. Now, he’s working across the aisle to prevent cartels from recruiting New Mexico kids, make sure that people who break the law pay the price, and get illegal guns off our streets, so all New Mexicans feel safe in their communities.

Agriculture and rural policy

Candidate position

Every New Mexican deserves access to high-quality, affordable healthcare. The current Administration and MAGA Republicans have gutted our healthcare system, leading to higher medical costs bankrupting families and leaving many in our rural communities with even fewer options for care. In Congress, Gabe has worked to lower healthcare costs for New Mexicans by supporting legislation to reverse the harmful healthcare cuts in the Republican tax law that threaten health care for over 35,000 New Mexicans and puts our rural hospitals at risk of closing, fighting for a public option, and ensuring that Medicare can continue to negotiate for lower prescription drug costs, because everyone should be able to afford life-saving care without going broke. Gabe has also fought to cap the price of insulin and introduced the Patient Debt Relief Act, that would protect American patients from the corporate exploitation, garnished wages, and home foreclosures that have ruined the lives of New Mexicans struggling to get back on their feet after a medical event.

Public safety and justice

Candidate position

Gabe has lived on both sides of the US-Mexico border, and knows the challenges and opportunities of our current immigration system firsthand. He believes we need commonsense border security and to deport violent criminals. That’s why he’s secured over $280 million for border security and wrote legislation to crack down on cartels and impose harsher penalties on human smugglers, fentanyl traffickers, and criminals who enter our country. And it’s why he believes that we should reform ICE to make sure that it is focused on deporting violent criminals, not rounding up gardeners and grandmothers who are working hard and playing by the rules. Gabe knows we must protect DREAMERS and provide hard-working families with a permanent path to legal status, while ensuring we have a safe and secure border.

Economy, jobs, taxes, and affordability

Candidate position

Gabe didn’t come to Congress to get rich, and he believes too many politicians look out for their own bottom line while doing nothing to hold price-gouging corporations accountable and lower costs. He doesn’t trade stocks and is leading a bipartisan effort to ban stock trading in Congress, putting an end to lawmakers profiting from their positions of power, so we can focus on making things easier for everyday New Mexicans.

Education, child care, and workforce training

Candidate position

We owe those who served our country a decent quality of life. Gabe believes that the best way to honor their service is by improving veterans’ medical care, ensuring access to mental health care and education benefits, and by helping veterans transition from service to civilian life. Since being in Congress, Gabe has introduced legislation to expand GI bill benefits, lower barriers to veteran health care, and honor the legacy of the Bataan Death March in New Mexico. In another term, Gabe will work every day to invest in veterans and improve the management of veterans’ services.

Public safety and justice

Candidate position

New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District includes the sovereign communities of Laguna, Zuni, Acoma and Isleta Pueblos, as well as the Mescalero and Ft. Sill Apache, and Navajo Nation. Understanding and upholding tribal sovereignty is absolutely necessary, in addition to respecting and honoring the government-to-government relationship that exists between New Mexico’s Native American communities and the federal government. That’s why Gabe has championed closing loopholes that allow prediction markets to operate functionally as sports betting without regulation, violating Tribal sovereignty and siphoning funding away from Tribal infrastructure, early childhood education, and public safety.

Elections, ethics, and government accountability

Candidate position

Ensuring safe, secure, and fair elections is important to all of us – every eligible American deserves to have their voice heard and their vote counted, regardless of their political party. But the fundamental right to vote is being threatened by politicians who want to prevent eligible Americans from voting, strip the ability to oversee our elections from non-partisan election officials, and allow partisan politicians to overturn valid election results if they want a different outcome. Many of these same politicians refuse to investigate the January 6 attack on our capitol and spread conspiracy theories about the 2020 election. Gabe will fight to protect every eligible American’s right to cast a ballot and have their votes counted and to make sure that, when the votes are counted, the will of the people prevails.

Every numbered U.S. House roll call published by the Clerk during the configured service window is reconciled through the member's exact Bioguide ID. Clerk XML through 2002 does not publish Bioguide IDs, so those rows require a candidate-specific official House identity and service bridge plus one unique exact published-name, party, and state tuple. A published roll without an identity-safe row is retained as an explicit source omission and is not labeled as a vote or absence.
