In 1955, Reverend George Lee, who helped found and lead the NAACP in Humphreys County, became the first Black man in memory to register to vote there. He was assassinated for it. My father cut his hair the night before he was killed. Months later, when gunmen shot Gus Courts, the man who took up the fight after Lee, my father and another man from Belzoni drove him all the way to the Black hospital in Mound Bayou and saved his life. Gardening and cooking classes belong back in our schools and universities, because the cheapest food is normally the food you cook yourself.
