Election rules, limits, and official sources

Selection: Primary candidates for governor may run without a lieutenant-governor candidate. General-election candidates form joint candidacies, and voters cast one vote for the ticket.

Residency: The Florida Constitution requires the governor and lieutenant governor to be at least 30 years old and to have resided in Florida for the preceding seven years.

Governor–lieutenant governor ticket: A candidate may seek a party's nomination for governor without a lieutenant-governor candidate. For the general election, candidates for governor and lieutenant governor form a joint candidacy, and voters cast one vote for the ticket.

How FactVote presents the public record: FactVote separates explicit executive actions from direct public statements. It may include executive orders, signed or vetoed legislation, specified appointments, budget actions, and statements when the official actor, action, and exact supporting text are available. An event occurring during a governor's term is never attributed to that governor by timing alone.

What the office does not control

  • The governor shares authority with the Legislature, Cabinet, agencies, courts, local governments, and other institutions; a statewide outcome is not attributed to the governor by timing alone.
