Q&A with Tex

A: I'm primarily self-funding. I'm running my campaign on a shoestring budget, and doing pretty much everything myself, including this website. I'm also getting support from friends, family, and small-dollar donors. Tex is a man of the people. Tex is beholden to no one. Q&A with Tex

A: Hmmm...OK here's one...I cut my own hair! I first tried it a few years ago after I heard that George Clooney did it. And I like it! I've gotten pretty good at it. It saves me a ton of time and money. I've calculated that I will save over $10,000 in my lifetime by cutting my own hair. It's frugality like that which is needed in Washington, DC! Ha ha.

What reforms to the US immigration system do you support? Why? ¿Qué reformas al sistema de inmigración de Estados Unidos apoya usted? ¿Por qué?

Candidate position

I think we already have good immigration laws on the books -- they just need to be strictly enforced. While I'm supportive of legal immigration, in general, I do think it's been exploited and several legal channels should be cut back or eliminated, such as H1-B work visas. There's no good reason Americans can't be doing the high-paying tech jobs that are currently going to foreigners (who then later bring in their entire extended family).

Do you believe climate change is a financial threat to the economy of the nation? Why or why not? ¿Cree que el cambio climático representa una amenaza financiera para la economía del país? ¿Por qué?

Candidate position

I do not. I believe our free market system eventually fixes problems/threats because new products and technologies emerge from market demand. Look at electric cars -- they were primarily a result of people wanting to drive cleaner cars, and now they are everywhere and their owners love them. It's an incredible success story. A negative turned into a positive.

“Freedom of speech” is included in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Exactly what does ”Freedom of Speech” mean to you? La libertad de expresión está incluida en la Primera Enmienda de la Constitución de los Estados Unidos. ¿Qué significa exactamente para usted la “libertad de expresión”?

Candidate position

Freedom of speech is included in the First Amendment because it's the most important. We can't have a free country without freedom of speech. BUT I believe we need to keep it simple and specific. To me, "Freedom of Speech" is only about speaking and writing. It's the freedom to speak and write without being arrested or harassed from my government. I do not think it includes "freedom of spending money" like our Supreme Court ruled. That interpretation, to me, has allowed big money to enter and influence our politics, and ruined it in many ways.

What role do you believe the federal government should play in education at the pre-school level, K-12 level and higher education? ¿Qué papel cree que debería desempeñar el gobierno federal en la educación a nivel preescolar, educación K-12 (primaria y secundaria) y educación superior?

Candidate position

I'm a big fan of public education but I think it should be entirely run at the state or local level. I think the federal government's only role should be to set some basic standards that teachers need to teach to and students need to achieve. We spend more money per student that almost all other countries, and we get terrible results. Most of the money is wasted in layers of bureaucracy.
