Unbought and unbossed

Source-published biography

As Councilmember, I’ve made a point to always choose the side of DC residents, workers, and families. I led legislation that raised wages for early childhood educators, created good jobs for construction and retail workers, ended the subminimum wage for restaurant workers, increased SNAP food assistance for families and seniors, and improved traffic safety around schools. As Assistant Attorney General, I fought to secure justice for victims of violent crime and built programs that put young people in DC back on the right track. As Mayor, I’ll always side with working people to make DC safe and affordable, and create a government that listens to and delivers for residents in all eight Wards. I understand the urgency of the moment and the power DC has to make life better for everyone.

Public safety and criminal justice

Candidate position

Janeese will implement a comprehensive public safety strategy that addresses prevention, intervention, and enforcement. It’s an approach she took as Ward 4 Councilmember when addressing crime on Kennedy Street and in Petworth. And it’s the approach she took when she was a prosecutor at the DC Office of the Attorney General. As Mayor, the entirety of her government will play a role in public safety, not just one agency.

Education

Candidate position

DC’s high rates of truancy and chronic absenteeism are unacceptable. Janeese will simplify the truancy system by unifying it and tasking one agency with the responsibility of navigating truancy referrals. She will expand after-school programming in all eight Wards because she knows firsthand how critical safe, enriching programming is for young people. Janeese will also ensure that students have the support they need to stay in school, including special education services, school-based mental health, and sufficiently staffed schools. She knows quality education starts with people, so it’s important to expand the workforce at schools to ensure there are enough professionals to meet the needs of all students.

Public safety and criminal justice

Candidate position

A key component of Janeese’s public safety platform is the creation of Community Hubs – places to bring people and resources together. We all know that DC is resource rich but coordination poor. Janeese will course correct by building on current infrastructure and resources, developing Community Hubs within all eight Wards. These Hubs, serving families and young people, will be safe, fun and enriching. These spaces will also be centralized locations to connect to city services like job programs and mental health services. The Hubs will partner with community-based organizations, so communities have access to what they need to thrive. Thriving, well-resourced communities are the safest.

DC is under attack and we need leaders that stand up and fight back, not shrink in the face of injustice. This starts with Janeese rescinding the MPD order that permits our officers to work with ICE, sharing information and transferring people to ICE custody. Janeese will use every tool we have to build coalitions locally and nationally to defend our community’s rights and values. She will work with DC’s delegate and Attorney General Brian Schwalb to protect Home Rule. She will walk the halls of Congress herself, and build relationships on both sides of the aisle, because that is our path to protecting DC autonomy and passing DC Statehood.
