Born in Kingman and raised in Phoenix, Jonathon Hill has lived, studied and worked in Tempe since 2000. Passionate about space exploration since childhood, Jonathon earned degrees in Aerospace Engineering, Geological Sciences and Russian from ASU, culminating in the defense of his PhD in 2021, which focused on automatically identifying salt deposits in the Martian southern highlands. For the past 19 years, Jonathon has worked as an engineer and scientist at the ASU Mars Space Flight Facility, operating ASU's camera on NASA's Odyssey spacecraft and ASU's instruments on the Spirit and Opportunity rovers. He has also provided engineering and scientific support to the University of Arizona's OSIRIS-REx asteroid sample return mission and NASA's Clipper mission, which will explore Jupiter's frozen ocean moon Europa. After completing his PhD, Jonathon looks forward to using his unique engineering and science skill set to address more pressing issues on his favorite planet... Earth.

Jonathon brings a unique perspective to the Commission, drawing from an unconventional yet highly relevant background. He is neither a politician nor a businessman—he is a scientist, an engineer, and a proud Arizonan. Jonathon has spent the past 18 years at Arizona State University, working on several NASA space missions focused on Mars, Jupiter, and asteroids. He has earned a master's degree in Aerospace Engineering and a Ph.D. in Geological Sciences, both from ASU.

The Commission can be doing so much more than it is to protect our water supply and protect access to water for lower-income Arizonans. The current commission continues to protect the interests of giant corporations rather than the everyday Arizonan.

We must replace the current system of rushed, formula-based rate adjustments with a rigorous process. I will restore full public hearings and ensure robust community input before any rate increase is even considered.

Ratepayers should not be subsidizing mega-users like data centers. I will demand strict scrutiny of utility spending and investments to ensure that public interests—not corporate profit margins—come first.

We need a forward-looking energy portfolio. By prioritizing low-cost, reliable, and water-saving energy sources like solar and battery storage, we can stabilize energy costs. I will champion energy efficiency and demand-management programs that directly lower monthly bills for households and local businesses.

The Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) is essentially Arizona’s "fourth branch of government." Composed of five state-elected officials, the ACC wears a few different hats that impact your daily life and wallet. Primarily, they regulate public utilities—setting the rates and ensuring the reliability of your electricity, gas, and water (excluding municipal utilities or SRP). But that’s not all: they are also the gatekeepers for Arizona businesses, handling all corporate registrations, protecting investors by regulating the local securities industry, and enforcing safety rules for the state’s railroads and pipelines.

We need someone on the Commission capable of asking the tough, technical questions when utility companies request rate increases. Jonathon’s goal is to leverage his engineering and scientific expertise to advocate for you, ensuring that hardworking Arizonans are protected from unnecessary and excessive rate hikes.

Lower Utility Bills for Arizona Families, Schools, and Local Businesses
Arizona families and small businesses are facing a persistent squeeze: utility bills are skyrocketing while water resources become scarcer and data center development accelerates—all while utility companies report record profits. The current Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) has failed to protect the public, instead acting as a rubber stamp for rate increases and adopting expedited review systems that limit necessary oversight.
